Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

Located northwest of Orlando, Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive offers a free 11-mile self-guided auto tour along restored wetland levees. Visitors can spot hundreds of bird species, alligators, turtles, and other native Florida wildlife directly from their vehicles. The slow-paced dirt road route typically takes around one to two hours to complete.

History

The area around Lake Apopka has a rich history, once supporting a vibrant agricultural community. However, farming practices led to ecological damage. The wildlife drive is part of a restoration effort to return the land to its natural state and protect the local wildlife.
