Big Sur National Scenic Byway (northernmost)

The northern end of the Big Sur National Scenic Byway begins near Carmel and quickly opens into one of California’s most famous coastal drives, where Highway 1 hugs steep cliffs above the Pacific. History

The Big Sur National Scenic Byway is the scenic designation for a long stretch of California State Route 1 along the Big Sur coast, a route long known for its difficult terrain and spectacular views. The northernmost section near Carmel marks the transition from the Monterey Peninsula into the more remote Big Sur coastline, which became widely celebrated after the highway was completed and opened the region to automobile travel.
