• The dam was built during the Great Depression as a way to control flooding, provide irrigation water, and generate hydroelectric power. It stands 726 feet tall and spans 1,244 feet across the river. The tour of the dam includes a visit to the inside of the power plant, where huge generators convert the energy of falling water into electricity. The dam is a popular spot for photographers, especially at sunset when the light reflects off the water and the surrounding desert landscape. There are strict security measures in place, so leave backpacks, large bags, and weapons behind. The tour involves walking and climbing stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for the heat if visiting in the summer. The Hoover Dam Bypass Trail is a pedestrian walkway that provides stunning views of the dam and the river.
