The Painted Church

St. Benedict Catholic Church, famously known as The Painted Church, overlooks Kealakekua Bay on the South Kona coast. Built in the late 19th century by Father John Velghe, the church features hand-painted interior murals depicting biblical scenes and tropical landscapes. Visitors can admire the preserved artwork, peaceful garden grounds, and scenic ocean views.

History

Originally built in 1899, the church was repurposed and transformed by Father Velghe between 1936 and 1938, who painted the enchanting murals that now attract visitors from around the world.
