Phantom Ship Overlook
A well-known overlook for seeing Phantom Ship and the lake’s dramatic blue water. It’s one of the park’s most iconic scenic viewpoints.
Phantom Ship Overlook is a scenic stop on the rim of Crater Lake that looks down toward the lake’s famous Phantom Ship rock formation, a dark volcanic spire that resembles a small ghostly vessel on the water. It’s a worthwhile pause for travelers who want one of the park’s classic viewpoints, combining dramatic lake color, steep caldera walls, and a clear look at the formation that gives the overlook its name. The view is especially memorable in good light, when the contrast between the blue lake and the rugged rock stands out.
History
The overlook is named for the Phantom Ship, a natural rock formation in Crater Lake made of older volcanic rock that was left standing as the surrounding volcano collapsed and later eroded. The formation’s ship-like silhouette has long been one of the lake’s best-known landmarks, and the overlook was established to give visitors a direct view of it from the rim road.
Expert notes
- Expect a roadside pullout rather than a developed attraction.
- Views can be limited by haze, glare, or weather, so don’t rely on a single quick glance.
- Use caution near rim viewpoints and stay on designated paths and overlooks.
