Located in northeastern Arizona east of the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest National Park features vast deposits of triassic-era fossilized wood alongside the vibrant geology of the Painted Desert. Visitors can drive the 28-mile scenic park route, view petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, and hike through colorful badland formations. The park offers an accessible window into ancient ecosystems and prehistoric history.

History

The Petrified Forest has a rich history, dating back to the Late Triassic period, over 200 million years ago, when it was part of a lush forest. Over time, volcanic activity and sedimentation transformed the trees into petrified wood. The area was designated as a national park in 1962, preserving its unique geological and paleontological features for future generations.

Quick tip: Drive the full park road from north to south between Interstate 40 and US Route 180 to see both the Painted Desert and the petrified wood concentrations.
