Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is a large coastal wetland and wildlife preserve along the Pacific in Huntington Beach, with boardwalks and trails that let you explore marsh, dunes, and open water without leaving the city. It is especially appealing for birdwatching, quiet walks, and seeing a rare Southern California wetland ecosystem up close, with sweeping views that feel very different from the nearby beach scene. History

Bolsa Chica was once part of a much larger coastal wetland system in Orange County, and the area was heavily altered over time by development, oil activity, and road construction. Conservation efforts later focused on protecting and restoring the remaining wetlands, and the site is now managed as an ecological reserve to preserve habitat for birds and other wildlife.
