Kalapana Black Sand Beach
FreeDramatic black sand coastline born from historic Big Island lava flows.
Though the original Kalapana Black Sand Beach was buried by Kilauea lava in 1990, a new black sand shoreline has formed where the lava met the ocean. Visitors can take a short walk across the hardened lava field, lined with coconut palms planted by locals, to reach the water's edge. While rough waves and rocky terrain make swimming unsafe, it remains a striking place to witness Hawaii's constantly evolving landscape.
