Unconditional Surrender

Located along San Diego’s waterfront next to the USS Midway Museum, Unconditional Surrender (also known as Embracing Peace) is a towering 25-foot sculpture depicting a sailor kissing a nurse. The artwork recreates the famous V-J Day photograph taken in Times Square at the end of World War II. History

The 'Unconditional Surrender' sculpture in San Diego draws inspiration from a photograph taken on August 14, 1945. It was on this day, known as Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day), that Japan's surrender was announced, marking the end of World War II.
