Ballard Locks

Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, this popular Seattle landmark connects Lake Washington and Lake Union with Puget Sound. Visitors can watch vessels of all sizes pass through the waterway and learn about the city's maritime history. The surrounding park also includes a botanical garden and a fish ladder with an underwater viewing area.

History

Constructed in the early 20th century, the Ballard Locks were built to facilitate maritime traffic and control water levels between the saltwater of the Puget Sound and the freshwater of Lake Washington. The locks have been a vital part of Seattle's maritime infrastructure since their opening in 1917.
