Waco Mammoth National Monument

Located in Waco, Texas, this national monument features the nation's only recorded nursery herd of Ice Age Columbian mammoths. Visitors can view real, in-situ fossil remains preserved inside a climate-controlled dig shelter. History

The site was discovered in 1978 when a local man found mammoth bones while digging in his backyard. The area was excavated, revealing the remains of 24 mammoths, making it the only known nursery herd of mammoths in North America.
