ʻĪao Valley State Monument is a lush, 4,000-acre park in Central Maui rich in natural beauty and sacred Hawaiian history. Visitors can walk along short paved paths to view the famous 1,200-foot ʻĪao Needle rising dramatically above the valley. The site also features scenic stream vistas, vibrant tropical plants, and historical exhibits on the historic 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai.

History

Iao Valley has significant historical importance as it was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790, where King Kamehameha I fought to unify the Hawaiian Islands. The valley is also revered in Hawaiian culture and mythology.

Quick tip: Non-Hawaii residents must reserve entry passes and parking online in advance, as cell service inside the valley is spotty.
