World War II Memorial

Located on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial, the World War II Memorial honors the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces. The plaza features 56 granite pillars surrounding a central fountain, representing U.S. states, territories, and wartime unity. Visitors can explore the open-air plaza and view the Freedom Wall, where 4,048 gold stars commemorate fallen service members.

History

The memorial was dedicated on April 29, 2004, and was designed by Friedrich St. Florian. It honors the 16 million people who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II, as well as the millions of citizens who supported the war effort on the home front.
