Bayside Trail at Cabrillo National Monument

Located within Cabrillo National Monument, the Bayside Trail is a scenic 2-mile out-and-back trail overlooking San Diego Harbor and the city skyline. Hikers descend through coastal sage scrub past historic World War II searchlight shelters and military sites before returning uphill. The well-maintained path provides sweeping waterfront views and ocean breezes throughout the walk.

History

The trail is named after Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the first European to set foot on the West Coast of the United States in 1542. The area around the trail has a rich history, from its significance to the native Kumeyaay people to its strategic military importance in both World Wars. The Cabrillo National Monument was established in 1913 to commemorate Cabrillo's landing.
