Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a standalone national park in western Colorado, located near Montrose rather than inside Rocky Mountain National Park. It is famous for its exceptionally steep, dark granite cliffs and narrow gorge sculpted by the Gunnison River. Visitors can explore dramatic scenic overlooks along the South Rim, hike rim trails, and experience some of the darkest night skies in the region.

History

The Black Canyon was designated a national park in 1999, although it has been a protected area since 1933. The area is known for its unique geology and diverse ecosystems, making it a significant natural landmark.
