16th Avenue Tiled Steps
4.7$· InexpensiveA vibrant community mosaic staircase showcasing panoramic views of San Francisco.
The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, also known as the Moraga Steps, is a striking 163-step public staircase decorated with a colorful mosaic that flows from sea to stars. Created through a neighborhood community effort, the stairs feature thousands of handmade tiles and glass fragments depicting vibrant sea life, flora, and celestial patterns. Visitors who climb to the top are rewarded with sweeping views of the Sunset District and the Pacific Ocean, with Grandview Park just beyond.
Expert notes
- The lovely spiral design with tiny sea creatures has a sea-to-stars theme. The tiles have the names of the sponsors’ loved ones, and few of them have the sponsors’ names. The top two sections of the stairs are the most photographed; one section with the moon and the top section with the sun. Enjoy the stairs from close up and far away. Visitors will also find beautifully manicured gardens on both sides of the stairs.
