A visit to San Francisco is only complete with riding the postcard-perfect moving national landmark, the Cable Cars. Andrew Smith Hallidie got the inspiration for Cable Cars after seeing an accident when a horse-drawn streetcar slid backward under its heavy load in 1869. Cable cars launched after four years in 1873.
Powell-Hyde is the most scenic line with Coit Tower, Alcatraz Island, and San Francisco Bay views. Dress in layers for chilly winds.
- There are three lines for visitors to choose from: Two lines start at Powell St and Market St intersection and continue to the Fisherman's Wharf area; one line starts at California St and Market Street intersection and continues to Van Ness Avenue.
