Created by artist Leonard Knight, Salvation Mountain is a massive, colorful folk art installation made of adobe, straw, and latex paint near the Salton Sea. Located in the desert approximately two hours east of San Diego, this unique roadside attraction features religious messages, painted waterfalls, and whimsical structures. Visitors can follow designated yellow paths to explore the vibrant mound and admire the devoted craftsmanship.

History

The mountain was created by Leonard Knight as a tribute to his faith in God. He started the project in the late 1980s and dedicated over three decades of his life to building and maintaining this unique site. Salvation Mountain has since become an iconic landmark and a symbol of passion, dedication, and artistic expression.

Quick tip: Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and cash for paint donations, as desert heat is intense and there are no nearby services.
