Children's Pool La Jolla

Originally created as a protected swimming cove, Children's Pool in La Jolla is now a world-famous sanctuary for wild harbor seals and sea lions. Visitors can stroll along the oceanfront seawall to enjoy sweeping Pacific views and observe seals sunbathing on the sandy shore below. Although beach access is closed during the winter and spring seal pupping season, elevated viewing remains accessible to the public year-round.

History

The Children's Pool was gifted to the city in 1931 by philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. The construction of a seawall created a protected area for children to swim. Over the years, it has become a topic of debate due to the presence of harbor seals.
